Left: Barter in 1959; Right: Age-progressed to age 53 (circa 2008)

DANIEL BARTER

Missing Since: June 18, 1959 from Perdido Bay, AL

Classification: Missing
Vital Statistics at Time of Disappearance

Daniel Barter was born on December 12, 1954 to Mr. & Mrs. Paul Barter. He was the 3rd youngest child of 7 siblings at the time of his disappearance. The eighth child was born after making it a total of 8, he was 4 years old, just 6 months away from his 5th birthday. Danny weighed 50 lbs and was 3'0" tall. He was last seen at his family's campsite in Perdido Bay, AL wearing only a pair of gray boxer shorts.

Circumstances of Disappearance
Barter was last seen playing near the banks of Perdido Bay, AL. At the bay side campsite were the boy's parents, three brothers, an uncle, and two cousins.

It was just about 09:45 and the family was preparing equipment for a fishing trip when they realized Danny was gone. About 15 minutes had passed since his brothers had last seen him near the campsite's small beach. He had spent the night in his uncle's car with the other children and he was barefoot, still wearing the gray boxer shorts he slept in.

The search for Danny started at the beach, a few miles north of the U.S. 98 bridge into Florida. Danny didn't like the water, and there were no footprints leading into the bay.
The search included several hundred volunteers and emergency personnel, the U.S. Navy, a trio of prizewinning bloodhounds, helicopters, skin divers, mounted posses and even hunters who stalked alligators and sliced open their bellies searching for signs of the boy. The bloodhounds repeatedly tracked the boy's scent to the same spot on a nearby road.

The case remained open for years, but no leads ever emerged. In 2008, investigators began a new push to solve the case with the prevailing theory being that Barter was abducted.

WAKE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA

ENDANGERED MISSING

 DOUGLAS STEPHEN SIMMONS

Missing since July 10, 1990 from Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina.

Classification: Endangered Missing

Vital Statistics at Time of Disappearance

Date Of Birth: April 9, 1970
Age at Time of Disappearance: 20 years old
Height and Weight at Time of Disappearance: 5'10; 155 pounds
Distinguishing Characteristics: White male. Brown hair; blue eyes.
Marks, Scars: Simmons has surgical scars on his left wrist and his right ankle. He also has a healed fracture on his right ankle. He has a small scar under his left eye.
Clothing: A red and white baseball cap, a white tank top, gray Bermuda shorts and white high-top Reeboks. He was also wearing a small gold rectangle key chain with the initials "DSS".
DNA: Available in CODIS

Circumstances of Disappearance

Simmons was last seen at a Grateful Dead concert on July 10, 1990 in Raleigh, North Carolina at approximately 19:00. He told friends that he was leaving the Carter-Finley Arena for a moment to go to his car; he never returned to the stadium.

Simmons and his friends were students at the University of Western Florida at the time of his disappearance; they had driven to North Carolina to see the concert and intended to drive back to school immediately afterward.

Simmons' friends called his father in Florida to say that his son had disappeared and they could not locate him. His friends then returned to their home state. Simmons' father drove to Raleigh four days later and filed a missing person's report for his son.

Investigators did receive one tip which they considered to be the strongest indication of Simmons' possible whereabouts in the week following his disappearance. A woman stated that she had spoken to an unidentified man fitting Simmons' description in New Jersey on July 16, 1990 -- six days after the Grateful Dead concert in Raleigh. The man was near a rest area in New Jersey and was extremely disoriented; the witness said he did not recall his own name, but said he was from Florida. She went across the street to locate a police officer, but by the time they returned to the rest stop, the man had disappeared again. There has been no sign of Simmons since that time.
